About Racing Pigeons

Racing Homers are Throughbreds of the Sky

A Racing Homer is a domesticated breed of the Rock Pigeon trained to return home from long distances even in unfamiliar territory. The modern Racing Homer is a Supreme athelete of great strength and endurance.  It has been bred through selective breeding to improve its ability to race, just as selective breeding has improved other breeds of race animals.  To place the Racing Homer in the same catagory of the common street pigeon would be as analgous to placing a throughbred race horse in the same catagory with the plow nag.

How Do Pigeons Race?

Competitve racing of homing pigeons takes place on almost every continent on the world according to strict rules dictated by the national club from which the pigeons fly from.  The objective of pigeon racing is simple.  Pigeons are transported from their lofts (home) to a specific location and then released to race back home.  The time it takes the bird to fly home coupled with the distance it has to travel, are recorded.

The bird with the fastest time wins.
